お抹茶のお点前をいただくとき、茶碗を回すところを見たことがある方は多いと思います。もしくは、実際に回していただいた経験を持っている方もいるかもしれません。
でも、なぜ茶碗を回すのでしょうか。
通常、亭主から一服いただく際、茶碗の正面が自分の方に向いて渡されます。
客は茶碗を正面からみて受け取ることができますので、もっとも美しい姿を見ながら茶碗を手にとることができるのです。
さて、その状態で手渡された茶碗ですが、時計回りに 90 度まわしたところでいただき。口元を拭いたら、反時計回りに 90 度回したあと正面を亭主に向けて返します。
この茶碗を回す理由は、亭主の手元に渡った茶碗を見ているとわかります。
亭主は、受け取った茶碗を正面を手前にして手元に寄せます。
お湯を入れてかるくお湯を回して水差しにお湯を流してすすぎます。そのご、茶巾で茶碗を拭くことになります。
実はこの一連の動作に回答があるのです。
亭主が水差しにお湯を流す際、左手で茶碗を持って亭主はお湯を流します。
茶碗を左側に傾けてお湯を流すため、茶碗正面を見て右手の側面からお湯が水差しに流れます。このとき、このお湯が流れる口は先程、客が口をつけたところです。
そう、茶碗を回す理由は客がお茶をいただく際の亭主への心遣いなのです。
言うなれば、90 度という角度すら意味をなさず、亭主の手前の癖などを考えて多少位置をずらしてこそ正解と言えなくもありません。
茶室にはこのように、より意味深いコミュニケーションをとるために客側も常に亭主へ心遣いを怠ることはありません。
こういった気持ちの積み重ねが、お茶をいただきながら交わされるコミュニケーションの質を高めていくことになります。
