A couple of weeks ago, I visited Taipei at first time. Taipei is placed at the south of Japan, and the time zone difference is 1 hour. The flight time from Tokyo is almost 3 hours.
I heard from some my friends that Taipei is really comfortable place to stay having delicious foods and being available Japanese language a little.
As for economics, Taipei has grown in IT industry by the EMS business model. And now, they are transforming their business to Service industries. Unfortunately, I was not able to see and look into various place this time. I would like to summarize my impression as below.
At first, I felt very serenity and quiet atmosphere at Taipei airport comparing to Shenzhen. It might be affected that Taipei is southern area country and warm temperature. Shenzhen has been the largest EMS city in the world now. At least, I felt the very different impression when arriving at airport and talking briefly any staffs including immigration.
From Airport to hotel, I was able to take a public bus service. The price is 130TWD and duration time is only 40 minutes.
I did not see that cabs and any other unclear service solicit to tourists. Comparing to SEATAC, I felt more safe.
For meals, I did not have a chance to try local casual restaurants. Food court and small restaurants at the shopping/office buildings are really good and cheap. For example, Starbucks tall size coffee is 75TWD and McDonalds BigMac is 67TWD. Comparing to Japanese price, Taipei price is from 70 to 90% cheaper than Japanese.
Interestingly, seniors are concerning that the consumption rate of rice is decreasing, and european and american food consumption is increasing specially among the young people.
Also, self-sufficiency rate in food is only 31%. Where do delicious foods come from?
Also, there are lots of Chinese historical products and arts in Taipei. If you have interest to Chinese historical art and products, Taipei is better place than Beijing.
For example, the Kanji character in Taipei is kept as old style. Also, religion, philosophy, and relic are alive in their day-to-day life as manner.
On the other hand, historical buildings are less than Beijing or any other historical city in China main land. And there is less earthquake in Taipei. As a result, fortunately, they are able to build a new beautiful buildings in the city.
Lastly, I would like to note about language availability. As you know, China, Korea, and Japan loves their domestic languages. And tourist cannot make a communication with English sometime.
In Taipei, however, lots of service person can use English and Japanese a little. I was able to ask a guard man at hotel about the next time when a public bus come. Another example, cab driver tell me price and show price board clearly. Surely, while they cannot speak and listen English, I can go to my expected place by showing Kanji character map and address to a driver. Of course, staffs at hotel or any other place helps for you to explain to cab driver about the place.
From those experiences, I believe that Japan have to learn from Taipei about Global level "Service".
