In Japan, most of people has been influenced by the presentation, "O MO TE NA SHI",for Tokyo Olympic 2020 by Christel Takigawa. By the way, What is the mind of "O MO TE NA SHI"?
To consider the meaning of this word literaly, this word is turned from the verb, "Motenasu", into the noun, "Motenashi". And, it is added "O" for making it courtesy expression, as a result, "Omotenashi". What is "Motenasu"? By looking at the Japanese dictionaly, this word means as below.
From this explanation, we are able to be aware that there are two persons on "Omotenashi", one is to provide "Omotenashi", another is to receive "Omotenashi". Meanwhile, what is the meaning of "expressing hospitality"? Certainly, it is difficult to figure out the real meaning of this word as literal analysis.
There are various meaning how to express hospitality. It is different between US and Japan, also depending on each family in the same country. Then, we have one question “Which style do we have to take, provider or receiver?”. In my opinion, I consider that “Omotenashi” has to conclude the common things and senses. From this point of view, “Monenasu” is the action of a provider. Meanwhile, the action should be expressed with the style of a receiver. Moreover, it is really difficult cultural things that the required skills of a receiver is to detect and recognize such expression. I consider that this receiver’s requirement is the most different things from Service, which is developed by division of labor, or Hospitality, how to treat a person carefully and kindly.
Well, I would like to introduce one book "炭屋、おもてなしはお茶の心で”.
“炭屋 - Sumiya” is “旅館 - Ryokan” like as a Japanese traditional hotel. A prior manager of Sumiya kept strictly traditional Omotenashi method of Sumiya. This style is far different from services provided by The Ritz-Carlton. This prior manager refused booking request from the customer who cannot figure out its differences. For example, the customer, who is a business person, requested a light for working at the desk because the room light is not brightening enough. Then, the prior manager rejected this request and refused this customer to attempt to stay again on the next time. He considered that too much light breaks sight and atmosphere. However, the current master reviewed this stye again. This book describes how the current manager tried to develop better service as Omotenashi at this Ryokan. I have interest for various ideas of the current manager how she provide Omotenashi to the customer who cannot detect and recognize the meaning of her expression. Thorough this process, I felt it important to look for the common senses and things. In other words, a provider should take 行 style if a provider is 真 style and a receiver is 草 style. Of course, it is better to take the same style in Omotenashi.
Just not only Olympic, innovation of technologies is melting in the various styles and cultures. When you have Omotenashi in Japan, I’m glad you to feel 真・行・草 mind from Omotenashi.
