A couple of days before the summer solstice, I visited Hakodate in Hokkaido prefecture, Japan. The city of Hakodate is a port town. So, I had interest to only fresh raw seafoods and Goryokaku, historical architecture. Once arriving at Hakodate, however, I was aware that this city has been growing as international city. From this point of view, I would like to summarize my note in this post.
I found five positive things in Hakodate, Wifi spots, English communication, street names, renovation, and traffic. I tried to introduce pros and improvement ideas from here.
At first, I was able to find enough Wifi access points in the city. Visitors are able to use Wifi at Hotels, public buildings, and trains. At each area, I was able to find the information of Wifi access. It seems that foreign visitors are able to ride on the train and walk around the sight seeing spots by using their smart phone or tablet. To improve the network environment better, Cafe or small shops are able to open free Wifi for them.
Secondary, English communication looks NOT hard for using any services. As for simple information or explanation, like as price, payment method, or etc.., each service person told to foreign visitors simply. And visitors looks figuring out the system quickly. For example, there is one pager for a driver of train how to say price, payment method, or dos/dons. I found Dos/Dons introduction at any other places. For example, I found simple with drawing introduction at Spa area in the hotel.
Also, service person was able to communicate in English sight seeing area at the suburbs as well. I saw that one service person explained to European how to lend a bicycle.
If Uber like cab services are started, this city is more comfortable for visitors all over the world.
Third, the street name is already set. In fact, it is difficult for Japanese to find current and destination place at unfamiliar city as well. The street name is really helpful for finding place information at sight seeing area. If there are more guide signs, it is getting better.
Forth, there are lots of historical buildings. As you may know, Japan is a famous earth quake country. Also, oceans are around the land. However, Hakodate is the place less earth quake and Tsunami historically. At the north area of Hakodate, there is one big mountain, Komagatake. However, it seems less impact if that volcano explode. As a result, lots of old buildings are re-used as public space, cafe, stores, or etc...
Lastly, Hakodate has good public transport accesses. From airport, I was able to arrive at city area 20 minutes by bus. The fee is only about $4. If you want to go to Tsutaya new book store at suburb area, you can ride on cabs 20 minutes, about $20. When coming back from Tsutaya, I was able to call to the cab services and to wait on only 10minutes.
In this travel, I found lots of advantages of sight seeing at Hakodate. However, each equipment is useful for staying for business as well. From now to the next couple of years, I look forward to Hakodate transforming the city as one of international place in Japan.
